A Simplified Order of Worship June 7, 2020 - Trinity Sunday
Call to Worship (After Psalm 13)
How long, O Lord? Will you forget your people forever?
How long will you hide your face?
How long must they bear pain in their souls,
and have sorrow in their hearts all the day?
How long shall the enemies be exalted over them?
But we trust in your steadfast love;
Our hearts shall rejoice in your salvation.
Opening Prayer
Blessed and glorious Trinity, God in three Persons yet united in one Godhead:
Direct our lives in good works, and after our passage through this
world grant us eternal rest with the righteous; Grant this, O eternal
and almighty God. Amen. [Mozarabic
Sacramentary; alt, TJC]

Prayers of the People
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who
sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever.
Amen.

“It Is Enough” is an original piece by the Rev. R. DeAndre Johnson. He
recorded this version on Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 2020 for the online
service of Christ United Methodist Church, in Sugar Land, Texas. He has
given Trinity his very kind permission to use this recording and has
asked that I relay this information: “Though originally written in at
the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castille, this hymn is meant
as a song of lament for all black sons and daughters who have been
harmed and vilified by the justice system. I’d also would love to hear
any feedback on how your community responds to it – especially if it
helps lead to any particular action or transformation. Blessings to you –
DeAndre”
From UM News: “On July 5, 2016, a black man named Alton
Sterling was shot dead by two white police officers in Baton Rouge,
Louisiana. The next day, Philando Castile, an African American, was
fatally shot by a Hispanic officer in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.
After
watching video of the aftermath of that latter killing, Johnson
couldn’t sleep. The first lines of what would be “It Is Enough!” came to
him as he lay in bed, and he rose and found his iPad.
“I typed out that first stanza, then I thought, ‘What more do I have to say?’” he recalled. “That’s when the rest of it came.”
The
text echoes a passage in 1 Kings, chapter 19, where Elijah has fled
Jezebel and finally cries out, “It is enough.” The different stanzas of
Johnson’s hymn elaborate on racial injustice, each ending with either
“Kyrie eleison” (Lord, have mercy) or “Christe eleison” (Christ, have
mercy).”

There are no words that can contain
The depth of sorrow, grief and pain
That mothers, sons, and all exclaim:
Kyrie eleison!
“It is enough!”, the prophets cry
Yet still black men are doomed to die
By those who wish to vilify:
Kyrie eleison!
It is enough! The guns must cease
From warring madness by police
Who are sworn to protect, keep peace:
Kyrie eleison!
It is enough! We cannot wait!
No more excuse for bias, hate!
Your savagery we cannot take:
Christe eleison!
No! No more death! It is enough!
No more dead sons! It is enough!
No! No more tears for lives cut short:
Christe eleison!
Oo my soul, it aches and yearns
For a day when passions burn
For others with deep love, concern:
Kyrie eleison!
I’ve had enough of these charades,
Of clichés and hasty crusades
Whose triteness wounds and cuts like blades:
Kyrie eleison!
There are no words that can contain
The depth of wounds our souls sustain
Each time a grieving heart exclaims:
Kyrie eleison!
