2021 Advent Candle lighting

This year's Advent Candle meditations use imagery from First Nations spirituality with traditional Christian ideas. Click here for the readings or scroll down to learn more about them.

The readings for this years Advent Candle Liturgy are adapted from a family Advent devotional booklet prepared for use during the pandemic in 2020. The booklet, "Advent at Home – together, apart!" was compiled by Rev. Dr. Kara Mandryk of Henry Budd College who incorporated an adapted Advent Candle lighting liturgy that some of the northern churches use every Advent.  "It is based on the traditional teachings of the Four Directions. These readings focus on the four life stages the directions represent – child, youth, adult, and elder and connect them to Advent related themes.”

Henry  Budd College for Ministry is named for Henry Budd, who in 1853 became the first person of the First Nations in Canada to be ordained as an Anglican priest.
